Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.

At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
